5-27-2006 Camara Runs Third at Indianapolis
SPEEDWAY, Ind. (May 26, 2006) -- Jaime Camara was unable to successfully defend his 2005 Freedom 100 race victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday, but scored a useful third place finish to move up six places, to eighth in the Indy Pro Series points standings, after four of 14 races.
The Brazilian started third, and in the initial laps joined race leaders Wade Cunningham and Jay Howard in a break-away from the main field. But changing handling conditions midway through the 40-lap contest resulted in Camara losing touch with the lead pair, though he remained well clear of the fight for fourth place.
Today’s result is Camara’s best finish this season, after difficult start to the season. In 2005, Camara had a pair of wins [at Indianapolis and Nashville] and five fop-five finishes to finish fifth in the final championship standings.

“It was a long, tough race. We didn’t have the best set up on the car and I couldn’t follow Jay [Howard] into the corners without lifting a little bit. I had a big push [understeer] in Turns one and two and couldn’t stay with Jay [Howard] or Wade [Cunningham]. When the wind picked up mid-race, I still had the understeer in one and two, and picked up oversteer in Turns Three and Four as well. Still, it was not a bad day, I did the best I could with what I had today. Third place is not bad, and it certainly helps us in the points, but winning always is the goal.” |
