Personal Info

With 16 IZOD IndyCar Series wins, a season championship and two Indianapolis 500 victories, Dan Wheldon has earned a big fan following from his success in the cockpit of a racecar. And, the genuine smile and friendly hello he gives to everyone have made Dan a fan favorite in the IZOD IndyCar Series paddock, as well. But don’t be fooled. When his helmet goes on, he is a ferocious competitor.

On the back of Dan Wheldon’s racing helmets, you will find a mural of England’s King Richard “The Lionhearted,” who was known for his bravery and heart. To make it in motorsports, a driver needs bravery and heart, as well. Those are the traits that have carried Dan from a go-kart racer in England to the pinnacle of motorsports – Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s winner’s circle.

Staring at not having a full-time ride in 2011, Wheldon agreed to drive Bryan Herta’s car at Indianapolis, where he made history for a second time this year. And it’s that “never quit” attitude that attracted car owner Sam Schmidt to Wheldon. As the most successful car owner in Indy Lights, Schmidt starts every race expecting to win – just like Wheldon.

With two Indy 500 victories, an IndyCar Series title and 16 wins heading into the final two events of 2011, Dan could rest on his accomplishments. But that’s not his nature. The Lionhearted still has more fight in him.
